General casting auditions for Unity Theatre Ensemble's production season are held on an annual basis in the fall of the year. The dates are published in the St. Louis Riverfront Times, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, The St. Louis American, the East St. Louis Monitor and on the website. Also, actors and dancers who are on our current mailing list receive an email announcing the audition dates. After the general audition, there is a casting call for the season. Any roles not cast during these sessions are filled by special audition held at the discretion of the director before rehearsal begins.
The general qualification for auditioning performers is previous performance experience documented by resume.
On occasion, an inexperienced person is cast in a supporting role when by audition there is demonstrated performance potential. Once cast, performers generally keep that role as a repertoire cast member when the Unity Theatre Ensemble goes on tour or does an encore production. There are exceptions to this rule when deemed in the best interest of the production. There are company rules by which all performers are expected to abide and a percentage fine system when performers do not abide. Each performer is issued a copy of these rules for review and signature along with a performance contract when casted. All casting is done by a per production contract only. Performers are paid on a per performance basis. The pay scale is based on the role and performance credentials. While Unity Theatre Ensemble is a non equity company, equity performers and directors are employed on a guest artist basis.
For the audition performers present two three minute monologue (one/dramatic and one/comedic); a song (accapella or with an accompaniment track). Dance auditions are held separately under the direction of the company choreographer.
Performance resume and 8X10 glossy are also required.
